Open-air Reservoirs & Channels

Stabilising and draining reservoir foundations

The soils supporting geomembrane sealing systems must be stable and drained to prevent any damage.

Draining bases, drainage trenches, facing membranes and trench drains can be executed easily and quickly with a needle-punched nonwoven composite with a network of mini-drains: teradrain®.

Draining gases

The air contained in soils is due to their organic fermentation, or air being pushed by groundwater rising.

To prevent this air from accumulating and pushing the waterproofing system upward, forming swellings and making the reservoir unfit for storage use, a network of de-gassing strips – separate from the water drainage network and connected to vents, is executed with needle-punched nonwoven composite with a network of mini-drains: teradrain®.

Typical applications

  • Stabilisation and drainage of reservoir foundations
  • Drainage of gases
  • Puncture resistant linings

Benefits

  • Protection of the geomembrane
  • Fast and easy to install alternatives
  • Water tight lining systems

Puncture-resistant base for the geomembrane liner

The base must be smooth, flat, dry and compacted, and free of projecting stones or debris. The geomembrane liner must be isolated from the aggregates by a thick, needle-punched, nonwoven puncture-resistant geotextile, bontec® protec 300 g to 2,000 g. The simple puncture-resistant geotextile will advantageously be replaced with a teradain® puncture-resistant drainage sheet, in order to drain the base and allow watertightness monitoring by collecting leakage rates.

Reservoir waterproofing

Waterproofing is a demanding function which allows no approximation; a hole the size of a one euro coin will let through about one cubic metre of water per hour.

The system design, choice of product, laying method and quality of the installation team are decisive.

HDPE geomembrane liners are heat-sealable products allowing exhaustive quality control of sealing.

Protection of the geomembrane

The geomembrane liner must be protected from backfills by a thick, needle-punched, nonwoven puncture-resistant geotextile, Bontec® Protec 300 g to 2,000 g, with a non-destructive earthworks technique.

In embankments, a puncture-resistant teracro® geocontainer structure will effectively protect the geomembrane and stabilise the top layer.
